Wait, yeah, that was a while ago."

"Slide" is a good comparison, though I always heard Matchbox Twenty as a better country group than rock. Doesn't change their terrible lyrics, but I think it provides a different understanding of the music. I definitely agree with your assesment of the Spanish song. I'd theorize that certain languages are better for different kinds of songs. Languages with harder consonants (D, K, P) are probably better with a song that's more rock-focused (Die Eier von Satan by Tool). Those with a more flowing sound (vowel-heavy, S-sounds) are better paired with simple acoustics and what J would call "sleepy" music.

Also: I love the examples you shared of messing with words. I need more of that. :)Allisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04695702772280501721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6384800972606780252.post-7355733735247219412013-03-17T19:04:38.696-05:002013-03-17T19:04:38.696-05:00Those songs are both so uncomfortable to listen to...Those songs are both so uncomfortable to listen to. They play electronic music in(hold your breath) African and Celtic traditions. I own all their albums but I've still never really decided if I like them - but I do know that they're interesting and keep me listening because of their mix of genres. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeNU600stLA
Jnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6384800972606780252.post-76776818974642009452013-01-23T19:46:57.336-06:002013-01-23T19:46:57.336-06:00Do you have any particular songs in mind? I think the dynamic probably works similarly enough in music, but I think that I would still react to them by saying they follow basic musical forms- talking about blues forms or rock forms might be closer to fundamental literary conceits like language and chapters and plot dynamics, rather than genre. I also suspect that just like you mention "many possible genres," songs that defy classification could also be seen as simply mixing different genres, in a way where you could separate the pieces out. Still, would definitely be curious what comes to mind for you as songs that defy classification...Joe Fontainehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10679448255257502481noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6384800972606780252.post-22910963789584119952013-01-23T17:10:48.443-06:002013-01-23T17:10:48.443-06:00I'd be interested in your take on songs that d...I'd be interested in your take on songs that defy specific genre classification. In the book industry, for example, an author writing a book with many possible genres is sometimes dismissed out of hand due to inability to wrap it all up with a neat little bow. To me, that just makes a book/song more interesting and "unique."Allisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04695702772280501721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6384800972606780252.post-65590310333986153682013-01-23T05:35:53.110-06:002013-01-23T05:35:53.110-06:00Just seen the band live(liverpool). Why a song connected with a video or movie may have more of an impact, turning an otherwise forgettable tune into a personal favorite. Why, no matter how many excellent covers of Come Together exist, none will ever be quite as good as the original (or the flip side, if I grew up with Michael Jackson's version and didn't hear the Beatles until I was 25, maybe I would still prefer the Jackson cover). Listening to music in a vacuum of headphones with eyes closed must produce a whole different experience than listening to it while driving. Just some thoughts.Jnoreply@blogger.com
